Barrister's on a Budget

Barrister’s Ball (aka Law School Prom) is upon us once again. This year’s WVU Barrister’s Ball will take place from 6-12pm on Saturday, March 22 in the Reflections Ballroom at the Lakeview Resort. Tickets are $50 and must be purchased in advance. The last day to purchase tickets is on March 18 and 19th, and these dates will be cash sales only.

Barrister’s Ball is a great time to get dressed up with your friends and family and enjoy dinner, drinks, and dancing. This event is meant to allow all in attendance to relax a little bit and get to know fellow students, faculty, and staff a little better.

However, purchasing a ticket and reserving a hotel room/securing transportation home incurs an expense on its own. This article will provide just a few ideas for how to dress for Barrister’s on a budget ?. Because let’s face it, we are all still living on loans and student budgets.

Barrister’s Ball

For the ladies, there are a few options for finding a stunning dress for Barrister’s without breaking the bank.

1. Scope out dresses from high school. Yes . . . I know. . . There are a variety of reasons why this option just won’t work for some people, such as if you no longer wear the same size or if you just had horrible taste in high school (haha jk? kinda.) Let’s face it, you probably only wore those dresses in high school once, at best, and are just collective dust in the basement of your parent’s house.
2. Swap options with friends. So, if there are no old dresses in your own basement, why not check with your friends? Last year, my friends and I pulled every possibility from our closets and tried on everything in case we found any feasible Barrister’s options. Even if you don’t find a dress from your friends’ closets, it will be fun to at least try.
3. Go thrifin’ like Macklemore. Sometimes all it takes to find a fabulous dress on a budget just requires taking a little time to shop around. There are a variety of thrift stores in the Morgantown area where you might just strike gold if you spend the time to search around. Even if you don’t go to a thrift store in the traditional sense, there are also a few options include T.J. Maxx and Gabriel Brothers. Keep in mind that people wear both long and short dresses for Barrister’s, so don’t be afraid to be a little adventurous.
4. Rent a dress online. https://www.renttherunway.com Rent the Runway is an online option for renting fabulous dresses instead of purchasing. On this website, you have the option to view a variety of upscale dresses, as well as viewing pictures of people who have worn the dresses. The pictures give you an idea of what the dress will actually look like. This is a great option because you get to rent a fancy dress and pay a fraction of the cost because you will only keep it for a short period of time.

Guys always seem to have it easier than the ladies in this regard. Men have a few options to get classy for Barrister’s on a Budget.

1. Wear a suit you already own. Tuxedos are neither required nor frowned upon. If you don’t want to spend money renting a tux, grab a suit from your own closet.
2. Borrow a tie from your friend, dad, uncle, cousin, or brother. If you want to wear your own suit but still feel the need to switch it up a little bit, swap swag with your male friends by checking out what ties or bow ties that are in your friends’ collections.
3. If you really wana church it up, Dirt, you can go on down to Daniel’s, an affordable tux rental business. No need to spend the money to purchase a tuxedo-that’s insane. Daniel’s is located just down the hill from the law school and has many options for tuxedos at a reasonable price.
4. There’s always this option: Dumb and Dumber
