Shuman Professorship

Robert Lemley Shuman was born in Morgantown, West Virginia, on March 21, 1917. He was the son of Goldie and Albert Shuman, who were descended from early settlers of Monongalia County. Albert Shuman attended the WVU College of Law from 1907 until 1909, passed the bar, and practiced law in Morgantown.

Robert Shuman graduated from Morgantown High School in 1934 and from West Virginia University in 1938. He received his J.D. from the WVU College of Law in 1942. Mr. Shuman worked his way through school by teaching in Dr. Ambler’s history class and R.O.T.C. classes. He served his country during World War II, then returned to Morgantown, in 1945, to practice law with Benjamin G. Reeder.

The Robert Lemley Shuman Professorship of Law is made possible through Mr. Shuman’s belief in hard work, thrift and integrity. We are proud to claim another two generations of the Shuman family as WVU College of Law graduates—son, Stephen K. Shuman, Class of 1971, and grandson, Robert Louis Shuman, Class of 1996 -and proud of the legacy of excellence in legal education and law practice that will be conveyed to future law students through this generous endowment established by Robert Shuman’s wife, Elizabeth, and their children.
