Christi and Joe: It Happened in Trial Ad

Joe and Christi Fabie met in Professor Charles DiSalvo’s Trial Ad class in fall 2012.

Two years later, in that same classroom — the Marlyn E. Lugar Courtroom  — Joe proposed.

Despite of being separated by a year — Joe is Class of 2014 and Christi is Class of 2013 — their shared experiences as law students helped them early on as a couple.

“Law school brought us closer together in the sense that we were able to better understand each other and what we were going through at various times — papers, exams, the bar, etcetera — than we would have been able to if we weren't both going through it,” Christi explains.

For current and future law school couples, Christi has some sage advice.

“I'd suggest not ending up in the same Trial Advocacy group. It's awkward to watch each other do mock trials,” she said.

The Fabies married in fall 2015 and settled in Christi’s hometown near Charleston, South Carolina. They are raising two children while putting their law degrees to work in a thriving real estate market. Christi is a broker sales associate for Carolina One Real Estate and Joe is the founder of Next Abstracting, a title abstracting firm.

Christi recommends that law school couples be on the same page early on about where they are going to live.

“I've taken two bar exams and Joe will be taking his second soon,” she said. “It would have been nice to avoid that if we'd narrowed down sooner where we wanted to live long-term!”
