    Prescription drug abuse is rampant. In fact, the Centers for Disease Control classifies prescription drug abuse as an epidemic. The number of prescriptions for opioid pain relievers—257 million in 2009—mirrors the national increase in prescription drug abuse—and death. Prescription drugs are a gateway drug. Nearly 1/3 of people aged 12 or older who use drugs began with abusing prescription drugs.
