National Energy and Sustainability Moot Court Competition

Let’s Power Up

West Virginia is our nation’s powerhouse, and we’re producing attorneys ready to light up the field. In our Energy Moot Court Competition, teams of students from law schools nationwide go head-to-head to build their cases and make their marks.

Real World, Current Issues

Each year, our competition focuses on modern issues facing the energy industry, preparing students to tackle these problems in the real world. Past competitions have been based on energy and sustainability issues associated with oil spills, nuclear incidents, shale gas development, and common law nuisance claims associated with power plants.

Judged by the Best

The bench in the final round has previously included U.S. Court of Appeals judges, U.S. District Court judges, and a former state Supreme Court Justice. Earlier rounds are judged by experienced energy and environmental lawyers practicing in our region.

Destination: Morgantown

We host more than 25 teams annually from around the country, including Kentucky, Maryland, North Dakota, Florida, Louisiana, Texas, Colorado, Wyoming, Oklahoma, and Utah.

Participation Guaranteed

Our format guarantees that each team will participate in a minimum of four preliminary rounds before the field narrows.

Plugged In and Up-to-Date

Energy and sustainable development? Our bread and butter. We offer extensive courses and experiential learning opportunities in energy law, and our expert faculty actively participates in the competition.
