A Legacy Since 1894
Founded in February 1894 by West Virginia University College of Law Professor William P. Willey, the West Virginia Law Review – initially known as West Virginia Law Quarterly – is the fourth-oldest law review in the country.
Professor Willey served as editor from 1894 until his retirement in 1917, working closely with the editorial board of the West Virginia Bar Association. Following his retirement, the West Virginia Bar Association was forced to decide whether to discontinue further publication of the journal or to secure other editors.
After careful consideration, Professor Willey was succeeded by an editorial board consisting of the entire faculty of the West Virginia College of Law, with associate Bar Association editors.
Students began to participate in the West Virginia Law Quarterly with Volume 22 in 1915-1916. Then, beginning with Volume 27 in 1920-21, a chairman of the Student Board of Editors was designated.
With the publication of Volume 52 in 1949-50, the name West Virginia Law Quarterly was changed to the West Virginia Law Review. Two years later, the first student editor-in-chief of the West Virginia Law Review was named, beginning a tradition of student leadership that persists to this day.
