Counseling
Confidential. Compassionate. Convenient.
Law School can be stressful, and we want to make sure you thrive here. Our in-house counseling staff will help you learn techniques to manage wellness and self-care that will serve you not just at WVU, but also in the future, no matter what career path you choose.
Get to know the person across the table. Our counselor brings several decades’ worth of professional experience to the WVU College of Law.

We offer short-term individual counseling (generally 4-6 appointments). We can also streamline referral processes between community and assessment providers, Student Health, Healthy Minds University, and on-campus resources.
Services offered include both in-person and telehealth appointments.
If you or a friend are experiencing a psychological emergency, please call 911 or go to your nearest emergency room. You can also call WVU’s Carruth Center at 304-293-4431 to speak with a trained professional.
If you need to speak with a counselor while our office is closed, please call the Carruth Center at 304-293-4431. They have counselors available 24/7 over weekends, evenings, and university/state holidays.
What to Expect
During the appointment, you and our Behavioral Health Counselor will meet for 30 minutes in person or over an encrypted, passcode-protected telehealth link to discuss your concerns. During the appointment, treatment options are also discussed. This might mean receiving services through us or through local, community providers.
If you are out of state, it is important to let our Behavioral Health Counselor know, as our licenses can only provide telehealth care to those currently in West Virginia.
We’re here to help, and we’re not alone. Here are some other local and national resources for students:
- WVU Carruth Center: WVU’s primary counseling center, open 24/7.
- Healthy Minds University: Based in the WVU Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute, HMU provides long-term outpatient psychiatric treatment for WVU students.
- Community Providers: A list of licensed therapists operating in the Morgantown area.
- First Choice Services: Provides helplines and hotlines across West Virginia and adjacent states.
- WV 211: A comprehensive database where you can find health and human services in West Virginia, including food pantries, billing assistance, and medical/dental providers.
- CARE Team: A multidisciplinary group that addresses and helps at-risk WVU students.
