Center for Energy and Sustainable Development

As energy demand rapidly escalates at home and around the world, our Center helps inform critical conversations on energy and environmental policies. We conduct essential research on pressing topics like data centers, land use, energy-related economic development, and more. Since its founding, the Center has acted as a hub for stakeholders to come together and explore cutting-edge questions in the energy sector.

As students, you are on the frontlines of the future:

  • Receive top training to become the next generation of energy and environmental attorneys.
  • Promote sustainable practices.
  • Guide local officials in sustainable land use policy practices.
  • Encourage development of clean energy technologies.
  • Advance the role of utilities in pursuing clean energy.

Landmark Energy Moot Court Competition

WVU Law’s first-of-its-kind energy moot court competition places students at the center of emerging issues in energy law and cutting-edge developments in sustainable energy production. Law students from across the country visit Law School Hill to compete while sharpening their appellate advocacy skills, gaining exposure to real-world challenges, and building connections with industry leaders.

WVU Law launched the first national moot court competition dedicated to energy and sustainability in 2011. The event is organized and presented each year by the WVU College of Law Moot Court Board, carrying forward a tradition of leadership and forward-thinking legal education.
