Summer Time in Morgantown

As law students, we are being taught to think and to work like a lawyer. On the other hand, I was raised on the idea that summer is a time to relax. Thankfully, Morgantown has been accommodating to both of these interests this summer.

This is my first summer in Morgantown, and so far it has been great! Between the runs on the rail-trail, smoothies at Terra Cafe, and laying by the pool, the summertime Morgantown feels very much like a country club.

Coincidentally, if you hadn’t heard, they are calling the new law school construction/addition “The Country Club” or “The Club” in reference to the actual country club which used to occupy the law school’s place on the top of the hill back when golf courses occupied the space that is now

Country Club

I don’t mean to paint too rosy a picture of what my summer has been like. I do spend the bulk of my time at work trying to impress the attorneys, learn as much as I can from them, and not over water my desk-plant “Fernando.” However, I have clearly had more time to spend with friends after work than I did during the school year.

One such enjoyable evenings was spent “turtle racing” at a bar called Coaches, this past Tuesday night. Although it’s apparently not an original concept, it was the first time I had heard of it, and it was a blast! Below is a video of the main event (although they actually race the turtles each hour).

The basic idea is:
1) Buy a drink → Get Tickets
2) Bet on turtle with your ticket
3) Turtles Race
4) Tickets are drawn from the Winning turtle’s ticket pile
5) Winner of ticket drawing gets T-Shirt/Gift-card

Either way, it was a great time, and I highly recommend it. However this week, I’m planning on trying out some of the local driving ranges. If any golf pros have advice, it would be much appreciated.
