Description: |
The Legal Department of the Johns Hopkins Health System and Johns Hopkins Medicine is committed to recruiting, developing, retaining, and promoting competent and dedicated lawyers. We believe that a diverse group of talented legal professionals is critically important to the success of our department, our clients, and the community. We define diversity broadly to encompass, without limitation, race, color, ethnicity, national origin, gender, age, sexual orientation, religion, veteran and military status, marital and parental status, and disability. With greater diversity, we will be more creative, effective and inclusive, bringing more varied perspectives, experiences, and interests to the practice of law in a corporate setting. In support of our commitment to provide opportunities to talented lawyers of all backgrounds, we offer a one-year legal fellowship. The fellowship is based in the Employment & Labor Affairs practice group, but also provides opportunities to work with other practice groups within the Legal Department. Eligibility and Criteria The following factors are considered when selecting a fellow: - Academic achievement; - Law school courses; - Experience or coursework in labor and employment law; - Grade point average (minimum 3.0 required); - Law review or other publication experience; - Moot court; - Legal aid or legal clinic participation; - Extracurricular activities; - Previous employment; - Demonstrated leadership ability; - Excellent writing skills; - Interpersonal skills; and - Sincere interest in corporate practice and employment law. Applicants who are members of groups traditionally underrepresented in corporate legal departments are encouraged to apply. To be considered for this fellowship, applicants must have recently graduated in good standing from an ABA-accredited law school and must be available to commit to a one-year program. Students who are in their final year of law school are encouraged to apply. Duties Through a staff of more than 30 attorneys, the Legal Department provides representation and advice to The Johns Hopkins Health System Corporation and its affiliates, trustees, officers, and employees acting on its behalf. A broad range of legal issues are addressed that include labor and employment, contracts, real estate, health care privacy, regulatory compliance, intellectual property, clinical practice, safety, business transactions, financing, and tax matters. As in-house counsel, our attorneys are part of the goal setting and strategic planning for the Health System. This role provides our attorneys the opportunity to do a significant amount of preventative lawyering, including coordinating, developing, and delivering training programs and helping the Health System comply with federal, state, and local laws and regulations. The fellowship will provide recent law graduates an opportunity to work with the Practice Group Leader and Chief Legal Counsel for Employment & Labor Affairs. Although the primary concentration will be in employment and labor, the fellow will support the other attorneys in the department as needed. The fellow can expect to research legal issues, prepare memoranda of law, review and draft agreements and policies, write position statements, represent clients before governmental agencies, and help prepare our clients for litigation. The supervising attorney(s) will review the fellows work closely and meet with the fellow to provide feedback. Through the work and challenges of a corporate counsels office, the fellow is provided with an excellent opportunity to learn how to partner with business units and help them solve problems. Goals The fellowship has three goals: (1) to provide highly competent, motivated, diverse, and recent law school graduates an opportunity to experience a corporate legal culture; (2) to provide the selected fellow with substantive experience working as an in-house labor and employment attorney; and (3) to develop a pool of trained professionals from which to draw as positions become available in the Legal Department. Application Deadline You must complete the online application for the Legal Fellowship position. The application is available at http://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/human_resources/employment/jobs/. Your application must be submitted no later than 27 March 2017. Please upload a cover letter and your resume and include your GPA. Conduct outreach to recruit pro bono attorneys to join TIDEs network of attorneys. Partner with and train a wide range of low-cost and free immigrant-serving legal services providers across the country to enhance their trans competence. Remain current on immigration law, policies and procedures and the implications of criminal law as it applies to the representation of TGNC immigrants. Work along with TLCs Program Director and program staff to collaborate with grassroots LGBT immigrant rights groups to support community-led deportation strategies. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS Law degree and three to five years experience practicing immigration law that prepares the applicant to train and mentor attorneys in the area of immigration law, supervise ongoing representation by pro bono attorneys, and conduct legal research and draft high quality legal briefs and memoranda, as necessary. Membership in the bar of at least one state. Solid knowledge about current TGNC immigration legal issues. A high level of independence and initiative, creativity, and good judgment. Excellent speaking and writing abilities. The ability to produce the highest caliber legal work. Skill at working collaboratively with grassroots organizations.
